LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI)—The City of Lafayette is moving forward with plans to build a new police station in Downtown Lafayette.
The new station will be across from city hall in what is now being used as a parking lot. The plan is to build a new modernized police station along with a new parking garage that will include an extra 350 spaces for downtown parking.
Mayor Roswarski says they haven't made plans for what they will use the current police department for once the new space is completed. He said building a new space for local law enforcement is a part the city's evolution.
"Public safety is crucial for the community and so the police department, having those type of tools and equipment is going to make them more efficient, more affective," said Roswarski. "Getting all of our police vehicles and all of our specialized equipment under a roof and in a secure location will be very important."
Construction for the new police station is set to start in the winter of 2021 and completed by 2022.
