LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — The man arrested for murder in Lafayette last week is accused of killing the mother of his children.
37-year-old Leon Chew was formally charged on Wednesday with murder in the shooting death of Germanine Thomas.
Chew faces the following charges:
- Murder (class X felony)
- 2 charges of unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon (level 4 felony)
- obstruction of justice (level 6 felony)
- carrying a handgun without a license (class A misdemeanor)
- carrying a handgun without a license with a prior felony conviction (level 5 felony)
According to police, Thomas died of a single gunshot wound to the head in the home they shared at 2414 Union Street. Police say they recovered the murder weapon on the roof of a church near the house.
Chew is also charged as a Habitual Offender. He has several felony convictions for drugs and stolen property in Illinois.
He's being held without bond.
