LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — What better way to celebrate Thanksgiving than giving back to the community? Lafayette Urban Ministry's annual Turkey Trot 5K is one way to do it.

The ministry is hosting the race on Thanksgiving morning. It's designed to financially benefit LUM clients.

The money from runners who register helps fund various programs. Some include the homeless shelter, after school program and their food pantry.

Last year's event raised nearly $20,000. Josh Prokopy hopes they can do the same this year.

“Thanksgiving is a time for giving back, it's a time for thinking about what we have in our lives that we're thankful for and how we can share that good fortune that we have with other people,” said Prokopy.

He said this race is beneficial in many ways.

“The race is a great way for people to do something fun and a little different on Thanksgiving morning, pre-burn off some of those pumpkin pie calories they're going to take on later in the day and do something good for charity,” said Prokopy
