LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) -The Lafayette Transitional Housing Center is preparing for the cold weather in the forecast.

If temperatures dip below 10° F this evening, LTHC will keep its homeless services open until 8:30 PM instead of closing at 6:00 PM. This will give the people who take advantage of LTHC's services a warm place to stay until Lafayette Urban Ministry's emergency shelter opens at 9:00 PM.

Executive Director of LTHC, Jennifer Layton, says the extended hours are dedicated to watching out for the health of those experiencing homelessness in the cold.

“Anything 10°F or below that can actually affect the health of someone experiencing homelessness. We will extend our hours until 8:30 at night that way people have an opportunity to stay here prior to going to the emergency shelter.”

LTHC will confirm any extension of operations hours on a day-by-day basis on their Facebook page.
