LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI)—24-year-old Jermey Dumas leaves behind a 5-year-old daughter and 8 siblings.

Police said they found Dumas on the sidewalk with gunshot wounds to his chest and arm while responding to reports of a shooting late Monday night. Dumas' sister Shatamara McNeely is feeling the loss of her brother.

"My brother was somebody," said McNeely. "He was a son, a brother, a uncle, a father, a nephew, a cousin. He would give you his shirt off his back."

McNeely told News 18 she believes she knows who is responsible however News 18 isn't releasing that, since no one has been arrested or charged. McNeely thinks the incident could have been prevented.

"These police officers get domestic calls everyday," said McNeely. "Get it together go and try to get these laws changed."

Sergeant Ian O'Shields with Lafayette Police said officers worked hard providing first aid to Dumas until medics arrived.

He said he understands the family is hurt and the department is doing everything it can to solve the case.

"As far as the investigation is concerned, gather all of the facts, it's not based on opinion, right, to build that case so they are working hard to, detectives, investigators, are working hard to gather the facts of the case so they can figure out exactly what happened," said O'Shields.
