LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — A World War I veteran from Lafayette is being recognized for his accomplishments.
Leonard Willman Inmon was an African-American soldier who died almost 50-years ago. He was buried in an unmarked grave at Spring Vale Cemetery, until now.
The General de Lafayette Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution dedicated a headstone to the veteran. They say every soldier is entitled to a military issued gravestone.
Inmon's cousin Rolanda Carter traveled from Nevada to attend the ceremony. She said it has been a great experience learning her family history.
"It's so hard sometimes to go back and do research on African-American History," said Carter. "And to find out just what an incredible person he was and how he served everyone, the city, the country, and the family is just amazing."
Inmon was one of 18 African-American World War One soldiers from Tippecanoe County.
