LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — A local student is being honored by Lafayette police.

LPD named McKenzie Brown its student of the month for March. She is a fourth grade student at Miller Elementary.

McKenzie's teachers say she has a big heart and always encourages others. She doesn't give  up, even when the work is hard.

McKenzie has some advice for those who'd like to win an award like she did.

"People should be nice to other people because if people wouldn't be nice to other people, life would be hectic," she said.

McKenzie was presented her award in front of her entire elementary school. She got a certificate with her name, two free movie tickets and an embroidered Miller Elementary blanket.
