WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — Klondike Elementary School dedicated its school office complex to longtime educator and administrator Cecil L. Helmerick.

Family, friends, and former colleagues gathered to honor Helmerick.

He retired from Klondike in 1988 and died in 2013.

Helmerick started his career as a teacher at Clarks Hill Elementary School and eventually became principal.

His 30 years of service were not forgotten as stories were told throughout tonight's ceremony.

Helmerick’s daughter says he'd be thrilled that people had such kind words to say, but his love for education is how he wanted to be remembered.

"The biggest thing is he loved children and that's what it takes in this business and there was no coming to work,” said Susan DeLong. “He had the honor to come to school.”

Helmerick also served as a Tippecanoe Township Trustee who helped supervise the construction of Battle Ground Elementary School.
