AREAS OF SNOW SHOWERS & SQUALLS WITH WIND............

Scattered snow showers/squalls will increase today & continue into tonight before tapering with lots of clouds & some hazy sun at times.  The snow showers may be enhanced & be accompanied with gusty winds of 40-45 mph as the second Arctic cold front moves through this evening.

Considerable blowing & drifting snow will occur today-tonight with greatly-reduced visiblity at times with slick roadways.

A few glittery flurries are possible Wednesday with hazy sunshine & some stratocumulus clouds.  The glittery flurries may fall from a near cloudiness sky at times with parhelias, parhelic circles &/or halos & sun pillars observable due to sunlight refracting the light beams through the falling ice crystals.

Then, note snow approaching from clipper Thursday evening.

1" or less of snow is expected over the area by tonight.  An isolated location or two might exceed 1" a bit, but it will be hard to measure due to the wind blowing it around everywhere.

Note the strong wind gusts from the west-northwest varying at 25 to 40 mph (40-45 mph gusts with front this evenign possible) now to tomorrow evening.

THE BRUTAL COLD..........

Actual air temperatures now to 5 a.m. tomorrow morning............by 5 a.m. temperatures should run -23 northwest to -12 far south/southeast & around -16 at Greater Lafayette.

By 7 a.m., temperatures should bottom out at -25 northwest to -15 far south/southeast & -20 around Greater Lafayette.

Frost quakes are possible tonight-Thursday morning. https://toronto.citynews.ca/2014/01/07/frost-quakes-heard-across-gta/

Wind chill by 7 a.m. Wednesday will run -50 in the northwest to -35 in the far south-southeast & likely around -40 around Greater Lafayette.

Afternoon actual air temperatures will run -20 to -9 (-11 around Greater Lafayette) with wind chills -37 to -24 from northwest to southeast (around -26 around Greater Lafayette).

We should run -25 to -13 Thursday night with wind chills -40 to -25.

Clouds will increase Thursday & wind chills should rise above 0 by late evening with temperatures rising to near 10.  We should rise to the teens Thursday night with a wave of snow & potential 1-2" of accumulation.  A band of 3-6" will likely occur with this system, but it is unclear where that will set up.

QUICK FLASH THAW WITH RAIN & ICE JAMS, THEN POTENTIALLY TWO WINTER STORMS WITH MUCH COLDER WEATHER......POTENTIAL OF SIGNIFICANT ARCTIC OUTBREAK AFTER SECOND WINTER STORM..........

After a teens Friday & 30s Saturday, a sudden flash thaw wil take place Sunday-Monday midday.  Temperatures will skyrocket to the 40s Sunday-Sunday night, then 51-57 Monday morning-midday with rain.  Gusty southerly winds of 20-40 mph are likely.

Ice jams & rapidly-developing potholes are likely.

Much colder air should follow with potential of two winter storms following the flash thaw; one mid-next week with ice & snow & another around February 10-11 with ice & snow.  The pattern will be very conducive to one of those being a significant winter storm with significant snow & ice accumulations.

Given the continued splits in the Polar Vortex, another impressive Arctic Blast could impact the area following the second winter storm.
