LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — The Islamic Society of Greater Lafayette is helping out workers at Franciscan Health East. The group brought a food truck to the parking lot, donating over 300 vegan and non-vegan meals to the workers.
The meals are being prepped outside and then brought into the cafeteria to adhere to social distancing. Irfan Salam is an employee at Franciscan and was the one who got the ball rolling on this event with the Islamic society.
"It's especially important to help out local medical workers as COVID19 continues to persist," said Irfan. "We need a sense of community and us doing this through donations through the members of the mosque, is allowing us to feel a sense of community and come together and be able to provide to other communities which are in need right now.”
Joni Deno, Franciscan's Food Service Manager, says that the whole hospital staff appreciates the gesture. “We just really are so happy that everyone rallies around us and is trying to help in this difficult time because it's all unknown to us,” said Joni.
Salam says the Islamic society will continue to be there for anyone in need.
