WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — State Road 26 at Newman Road is closing for 45 days starting on Monday, Jun. 1.
This closure is for the road between U.S. 231 and Sharon Chapel Road. The city of West Lafayette is adding a round-about and an extra traffic lane.
Director of Development Erin Easter said that area was due for improvements. This project is part of the Newman Road Underpass project that began in March. Easter said a month and a half road closure isn't too bad for a project like this.
"In terms of road closures for construction, it's pretty short, it'll be a very quick turn around for that stretch of road and it'll be open in time for school," said Easter.
Easter said the goal of all these projects in that area is to create a better traffic flow as more industry is going up behind the Newman Rd. bridge.
"While we were planning the Newman Rd. project, we decided that the intersection of State Road 26 and Newman Road probably could use some improvements as well and it fit within the budget of the project," said Easter.
The project will start on Jun. 1 and end on Jul. 15. Detour signs will be up. The entire underpass project is set for completion in early November.
