SULLIVAN COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - The Indiana Department of Corrections announced Sunday that it has its first correctional officer death due to COVID-19.
67-year-old Gary Weinke died from complications due to the virus on Saturday, April 25th. He worked at the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility located in Sullivan County.
IDOC said Officer Weinke began his career at WVCF in the Commissary Department in March of 2007. He later transferred to custody. His wife also works as a Correctional Officer at the facility.
His last day working was March 29th. IDOC said it was later reported to leaders at WVCF that he had symptoms of the virus and eventually tested positive.
"Our condolences go out to his wife Naomi, his family, and his friends. He was a one-of-a-kind officer who touched the lives of many of those that he worked closest with. He will be truly missed," said Acting Warden Frank Littlejohn in a statement.
