INDIANA — The five Catholic bishops of Indiana have collectively decided to suspend Sunday and weekday masses starting Wednesday, Mar. 18.
This effects all public Sunday and weekday Masses throughout the Province of Indiana, which is comprised of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis and the Dioceses of Gary, Evansville, Fort Wayne-South Bend, and Lafayette.
This comes following the recommendations from health officials concerning the danger of the COVID-19 pandemic. Health leaders say as of now, social distancing is the best way to prevent the spread of the virus.
This closure will continue indefinitely at this time.
Statement from CBS News:
Bishop Robert J. McClory of Gary, IN. noted that the diocese has been actively monitoring the public health response to the Coronavirus. “The decision to temporarily suspend the public celebration of the Mass was not taken lightly,” Bishop McClory explained. “The spiritual resources of the Church will still be made available, but will be provided within the context of the current health crisis”.
