Did you know socks are the number one requested item in homeless shelters? That's the message the Sock for Shelter Campaign is sending. It's a donation drive hosted by United Steelworkers Local 115.
They'll be placing bins for people to drop of pairs of socks. The totes can be found at local Lafayette businesses. The donations will go towards Lafayette Transitional Housing, Family Promise and Lafayette Urban Ministry.
Local 115 President Spencer Buchanan said this was a golden opportunity to help those facing homelessness in the community.
"Socks is a good starting point. These agencies already do a lot for homelessness in our community and we wanna take a small step to help," said Buchanan.
Socks are highly requested given the amount of walking those living on the streets have to do.
Socks will be collected starting October 11, 2021, thru December 10, 2021, at the following locations:
- United Steelworkers 115 Union Hall
- IBEW Union Hall
- Riehle’s Neighborhood Bar and Grill
- Magoo’s Pub and Pizza, Riehle’s Filling Station
