Health Experts say it's never too late for a flu vaccine

While the earlier you get vaccinated the better, experts say it's still okay to get the flu shot late in the season.

TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLF)—Is it too late to get the flu shot this far into flu season? Local health experts say it's never too late to get vaccinated.

While the earlier you get vaccinated the better, experts say it's still okay to get the flu shot late in the season. The only issue is supply.

Local pharmacies may run out of flu vaccinations before the season is over, which lasts until March or April.

Libby Richards, Associate Professor at Purdue's School of Nursing, explained the longer you wait, the more you risk that.

"You don't want to wait thinking that we will still have a stock of flu vaccines in February or March," Richards said. "We have ample vaccines available now, so now is the time to get it."

Health professionals especially urge people to get vaccinated as soon as possible because the vaccine takes up to two weeks to develop full immunity.

Richards went on to say that with so many parties and get-togethers during the holiday season, it's especially important to get vaccinated early. She explained people on both ends of the age spectrum are more likely to contract the disease.

"If you know you are going to be visiting someone like grandma or grandpa or a new baby it's really important that you get vaccinated far in advance."

As we previously reported, there have been three flu-related deaths in Indiana this year. In 2018, Indiana had more than 200 flu deaths.
