LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — Smiles and handshakes welcomed new members of the Greater Lafayette community Thursday.

The Greater Lafayette newcomers event, in its second year, paired new residents with city organizations in speed dating fashion.

Community members only had a few minutes to mingle at the organization's table, but could stick around longer if they wanted.

One of the newcomers moved to Lafayette from a larger community.

She says this was an idea that sparked her interest.

"We moved here and it's just a much smaller community so I figured we'd have to try a little harder to find the things to do and just know how to access them," said Karen Williams.

Williams has only lived in the Lafayette for one week.

She says she missed a concert to attend the event because she wanted to meet community members.
