INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Gov. Eric Holcomb has directed flags at state facilities in a southwestern Indiana county to be flown at half-staff to honor a soldier who died in a training accident in Washington state.

Holcomb's office said Tuesday that flags in Vanderburgh County should be flown at half-staff from sunrise until sunset Wednesday for 23-year-old Army Spc. Drew Richardson Watters on the day of the Evansville man's funeral.

The county's businesses and residents were also asked to lower their flags for Watters, who was married and had a 2-month-old son.

The 7th Infantry Division says Watters died Nov. 4 in a training area of Joint Base Lewis-McChord, near Tacoma, Washington.

His father, Scott Watters, tells WFIE-TV that his son was struck and pinned beneath a large armored vehicle known as a striker.
