LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — The new Glen Acres Elementary is 175 days away from being open for students!
It is conveniently located right next to the current Glen Acres, which will eventually be torn down to make room for a new traffic pattern and parking. In some places, the buildings are 20 feet apart.
News 18 walked around the new school and saw the progress.
Lafayette School Corporation's superintendent said everything is on track.
There are new classrooms, a new cafeteria and some new character. The principal of Glen Acres said this school has exactly what she and her staff want.
"It has the space to be able to break out and to do some different things with kids, so we are not pigeonholed into a room," said the seven-year principal Megan Hatke.
The current Glen Acres is 65,000 square feet. The new one tops out at 85,000 square feet.
The overall feeling is joy.
"The kids who will be attending here next year are excited," said Lafayette School Corporation's superintendent. "The staff is excited and we are going to have opportunities once we do get open next fall that the community will be invited."
Invitations will also extend to current fourth graders who will miss out on the school. The superintendent wants to show the community and supporters what they have been a part of.
He says one of the biggest projects was the gym.
"I think the gym is going to be a showpiece and that'll be pretty cool," said Huddle.
The gym has activities like hopscotch and four square. To help the students learn geometrical terms are scattered throughout the entire floor.
The entire new Glen Acres Elementary also has a new safety initiative.
"The one thing you want to look out for is safety of the students first and foremost," said Huddle.
The safety measure includes that all guests have to report to the office after they get let in and also traffic patterns will be safer and less congested than they used to be.
The former Glen Acres student and 17-year educator says this school has everything she wants.
Hatke said there is nothing she would change.
The whole building would not be on track without help from the team of architects and the Glen Acres staff.
"It literally was designed in cooperation with the architects and through multiple multiple meetings with the staff," said Huddle.
The first day for classes for students at the new Glen Acres Elementary is August 6th.
