LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) -- If you do good, you feel good, that's according to a Franciscan Health study. And the hospital is now testing that research with the community in hopes of improving mental health.
The hospital has introduced the Do Good-Feel Good 30-Day Challenge. People who sign up will receive a challenge and an inspirational message every day for a month through text or email. It's designed to encourage people to find at least one positive task to accomplish each day.
The hospital created this challenge to help combat a growing issue. Before the pandemic, nationwide one in ten adults reported feeling symptoms of depression and anxiety. And during the pandemic, that number jumped to four in ten adults.
This challenge can be personalized to every individual who signs up. For people who want to find ways to cope with depression, that's one challenge. If they want to work through handling anxiety that's another challenge. And each day the challenges are as simple as finding one thing to be grateful for.
"It's built around journaling. gratitude, exercise, meditation, random acts of kindness and devotionals and so all these things built together over a period of time really helps people change the way they look at the world," said Jim Slavo, a spokesperson with Franciscan Health Hospital.
He said habits can be built within 21 to 28 days. And creating a habit is not limited to just physical activities, you can improve mentally as well with positive psychology.
"The data says that people that think from a positive state of mind, they're 31% more productive in life when they actually look at things from a positive state of mind as opposed to like a stress-induced state," said Slavo.
The challenge is 30-days from whenever you decide to start. Slavo is encouraging participants to write down and keep track of each task and challenge they complete to see their mental health progress at the end of the month.
