MIAMI COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) – One of the four people injured has died due to the injuries suffered in a multi-vehicle crash that happened on U.S. 31 near Miami County Road 1200 South.
According to police, Linda Taylor of Russiaville succumbed to injuries sustained in Saturday's crash. Taylor was flown via medical helicopter to a Ft. Wayne hospital.
Senior Trooper Mike Meiser with Indiana State Police arrived on scene first. He said Krista Shepherd from South Bend was driving southbound just before 2 p.m. on Saturday. Southbound traffic, on U.S. 31, was backed up because of a lane restriction for a work zone. Police report that Shepherd didn't slow down in time, causing her to rear-end a minivan, driven by Tamara Burton from Kokomo.
The initial crash caused Burton's van to rear-end a vehicle driven by Barbara Rohde from Peru.
Shepherd and Rohde were transported, by ambulance, to Howard Community Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. They have both been treated and released. Burton was flown via medical helicopter to a Ft. Wayne hospital, treated and released.
Police are still trying to determine why Shepherd didn't stop for traffic in the first place. This is an ongoing investigation.
Senior Trooper Mike Meiser was assisted by the Grissom Fire Department, the Galveston Fire Department, Dukes’ Hospital EMS, Howard Community EMS, Lutheran Medical Helicopter, and the Miami County EMA.
