LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — An area Thanksgiving tradition gets people on their feet before sitting at the dinner table.
The annual Turkey Trot 5K race is now open for registration. About 400 runners brave the chilly weather to raise money for Lafayette Urban Ministry.
Race organizer Josh Prokopy said it's fun for the family to get a fresh start on the holiday.
"This is a great way to come out first thing in the morning," Prokopy said, "Experience that crisp, cold weather and burn off some of those calories before you even consume them."
Prokopy said it's not your ordinary race.
"It's a beautiful course out here so the run is a lot of fun. People bring dogs. They bring strollers. They wear costumes. It's just a fun event," Prokopy said.
The race begins at 8 a.m. on Thanksgiving. Check-in begins at 6:30 a.m. The cost is $35 for adults and $10 for kids 12 and under. To register, click here.
