WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — Purdue sports teams are on a roll in 2021. The Associated Press released preseason men's basketball rankings on Monday afternoon, naming Purdue No. 7 overall. Men's basketball is the fifth team from Purdue in the national top 25 of its respective sport.
RANKED PURDUE TEAMS:
Men's Basketball (Preseason): 7th
Women's Soccer: 19th
Men's Golf: 22nd
Men's Basketball earned its highest preseason ranking since 2009 with a No. 7 spot. The Boilermakers were also No. 7 preseason in 2009.
Football broke its 14 year streak of being unranked after topping previously No. 2 Iowa, 24-7 on Saturday. The last time Purdue made an appearance in the top 25, Joe Tiller was head coach and Curtis Painter was the starting Quarterback. The football Boilers will be back in action on Saturday at Ross-Ade at 3:30pm against Wisconsin.
Volleyball logged its first victory over No. 15 Penn State at Holloway Gym since 2010. Before that match, the last time Purdue beat the Nittany Lions at home was in 1987.
Women's Soccer recorded its best record since 2007, and held its first ranking since 2009 earlier this season.
Men's Golf won its first tournament since 2019 at Rich Harvest as a team, with Herman Sekne as the individual champion. Sekne was tabbed player of the week at the beginning of October.
