LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) —You may have noticed almost every Thursday News 18 airs a fugitive search segment.

This month marks 15 years of our partnership with the Lafayette Police Department on the segment.

In that time, more than 700 fugitives have been featured.

According to LPD's website, around 60 percent of them are caught.

A group of officers typically choose a fugitive who has more serious crimes or can not be located.

Lt. Matt Gard helps with fugitive search and he said getting the information out to the public is vital.

"It really gives the community an opportunity to take part in making their city a safer place," said Gard. "The more information we can get out there to the public the better.

When community members call in about fugitive search, dispatch takes the call.

It's then assigned to any of the officers working the streets.
