LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - The Lafayette Fire Department is investigating a structure fire that happened around 3:30 Friday morning. The fire happened near Tippecanoe and Salem Street.
Two of the people that lived in the building were pronounced dead. The identities of the two deceased have not be released at this time, pending positive identification and proper notifications of family members by the Tippecanoe County Coroners’ Office and Lafayette Police Department.
One other resident that lived in the building is reportedly recovering in a local hospital. There have been no other reported victims.
When News 18 arrived, Lafayette Police had the area blocked off while the Lafayette Fire Department worked to put the fire out. At one point, firefighters got out a chainsaw to access the roof of the building.
As of late Friday morning, investigators from Lafayette Police and Fire were working to determine to the cause of the fire. It is uncertain if the fire was intentionally started.
