LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — Lafayette police believe 55-year-old Eddie Cole was the driver of the vehicle involved in a hit-and-run that injured a man early Saturday. Sgt. Matt Gard said the vehicle, identified as a white 2002 Chevy Express van, was found in the 1700 block of Summertime Trail. That is on the south side of Lafayette near the intersection of 18th Street and Ortman Lane.
Sgt. Gard said the vehicle was Cole's work vehicle. No arrests have been made, and Cole has provided a statement to police. Gard said he is unable to release the details of the statement.
Around 2:20 Saturday morning, police said the van hit a man near the intersection of Twyckenham Boulevard and 9th Street. Police said the victim of the crash suffered broken ribs and a possible broken pelvis.
After a brief search, police were able to identify the vehicle based on the parts at the scene. Gard said an LPD officer knew where the van was based off a description. An investigator then went out and positively identified it as the van involved.
Police said there is no indication that Cole was intoxicated at the time of the crash.
The case has been forwarded to the prosecutor's office for possible charges.
