At this point, it seems that this was our chance to get a snow in before January 1 & we have done it!

This system was an extremely efficient snow producer with great frontagenetical forcing in the Snow Growth Zone over the heart of the viewing area & south & eastward. Great dendrite formation occurred in that 6,000-12,000' zone.

Some of the ratios were 20:1!  For example, the 2.2" measured at our WLFI ob site melted down to 0.12" & another site northeast of Lafayette measured 2.8" with 0.12" liquid.  3.0" totals just southeast of Lafayette only melted down to 0.15".  In a traditional 10:1 ratio 0.16" would equal 1.6" of snow.

More often these ratios exist in a dry, very cold airmass.  It was 27-31 in this case.

However, in our northwestern counties, the production was not as efficient.  Multiple observations site received 0.5-1" snow, but the liquid was 0.05-0.07".

So, the efficient frontal forcing in the 6,000-12,000' zone was in the areas that saw the totals higher than expected.  The amounts greately decreased with northwest & westward movement from this zone.

For example, 1" was reported in the Otterbein area, while 1.5" fell at Montmorenci, but 3" was measured just southeast of Lafayette.

Same thing in Carroll County.  1.6" was measured at Flora, while 3.5" was measured at Burlington.  So, totals tended to decrease rapidly over a short distance.

0.5" was measured by COOP observer west of Chalmers, but Battle Ground measured 2".

So.........1" or less northwest half of the viewing area occurred & 1-3" southeast half with a few isolated +3" amounts in a narrow corridor from Crawfordsville to Burlington to Kokomo.

Just a few areas of flakes & even sprinkles are possible the rest of today with lots of clouds.  We are 29-33 right now, headed for 32-35 with melting.

Re-freezing will get underway over the entire area 6 p.m. & onward.

Some lake effect flurries & snow showers are possible tonight along with some patchy freezing drizzle.  Given this & any moisture & slush re-freezing watch for slick areas on roads tonight-Thursday morning.

With a few flurries/snow showers & some patchy freezing drizzle to drizzle & cloudy skies, highs Thursday of 33-39 are expected.  Some clearing is possible in places Thursday night with 20s (if we completely clear then some areas teens) & patchy freezing fog with a some slick spots.

Near 40 to the 40s Friday (with south wind 12-23 mph) will give way to 40s to 50 Saturday with a few showers late in the day (with south-southwest winds 20-30 mph).

Near 40 to the 40s Sunday with some sun (west to northwest wind 15-25 mph) will lead to 46-54 (with southwest wind 15-25 mph) Monday with sun.

A few showers are possible Tuesday with 40s to 50s (southwest to west, then northwest wind 15-30 mph), then cooler weather Wednesday with 30s to lower 40s & lows in the 20s.

Rain is likely Christmas Eve to perhaps Day with 50s & strong south-southwest winds to 40 mph.

More rain is likely December 26-27 period followed by much colder weather with highs 20s to 30s (lows 12-18) with potential of snow.
