LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — A crash involving a dump truck and a semi shut down Veterans Memorial Pkwy between US Hwy 231 South and Old US Hwy 231 South Monday afternoon. According to the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened around 12:13 p.m.
The initial investigation by officials said Tippecanoe County Highway Department dump truck was traveling west on Veterans Memorial Parkway. The dump truck drove left of center and struck an eastbound Republic Services trash truck. As a result of the collision, the dump truck caught fire after coming to rest against the south guardrail.
The Sheriff’s Office said the driver of the dump truck, Mitchell Lehman of Lafayette, was injured and suffered burns from the collision. He was flown to an Indianapolis hospital and is currently undergoing treatment. The driver of the trash truck, Brence Judah-el of Lafayette, suffered minor injuries and was transported to IU Health Arnett Hospital for evaluation. Judah-el was released after evaluation at a local hospital.
Crews are working to clean up hazardous materials and debris from the crash. The roadway is expected to be re-opened around 5:30 pm today.
