LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Renovations on Tippecanoe County's courthouse are one step closer to starting.

County commissioners accepted more than $2,000,000 in bids Tuesday morning.

The project will transform the auxiliary courtroom into the new Superior Court 7. Currently, there are two candidates running for Superior Court 7.

A new juvenile courtroom and space for the Probation Department will also be added. After the additions, the courthouse will be home to ten courts.

Commissioner Tom Murtaugh said the new additions will help meet the needs of the County.

"State legislature approved a new court because of the demand here in Tippecanoe County. So we are tasked with creating that new court space within the courthouse,” said Murtaugh.

"This project will be complicated because we have to obviously continue to operate the courthouse while this project is going on. So some of this work is going to be done in the evening and on weekends to keep the disruption at a minimum,” added Murtaugh.

Murtaugh said construction is expected to begin around March.

The project will be finished by January of 2021.
