LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — Construction for the Columbian Park Zoo Penguin Exhibit is underway.
On Monday construction teams braved the cold as they work to reach the goal of completion set for early 2020.
Most of the indoor exhibit is done. They're working on getting the outdoor part of the exhibit including the pond and the seating area complete.
Columbian Park Director Neil Dale said this will be an educational exhibit. They're getting eight African Black-Footed penguins from a California Zoo. They will be here a few months after construction is finished.
Dale said his staff is preparing for the penguins right now.
“We are going to other zoos in the area learning how they take care of them, learning the best ways to provide them quality care and preparing ourselves to be able to provide the best care as possible,” said Dale.
He said the penguins will be a great addition to Greater Lafayette.
“It's going to bring a lot of good opportunities for the public to come and see a new species to learn about the struggles they go through everyday in the wild and we can hopefully pass on some knowledge for the citizens of Lafayette,” said Dale.
The exhibit is set to be open to the public when the zoo opens in April.
