TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) -Governor Eric Holcomb established a new Jail Overcrowding Task Force.
On Wednesday, Holcomb appointed three officials to the task force committee to combat congested jails throughout Indiana.
Those three are Tippecanoe County Commissioner Tracy Brown, Indiana Commission Deputy Director Doug Huntsinger and Hamilton County Corrections Director Ralph Watson.
Brown says their goal is to figure out how to stop overcrowding so they can make it safer for inmates, and officers.
"look at issues related to jail overcrowding, and come up with some initiative ideas on things that jurisdictions might do to better ease overcrowding or get a snapshot of what is causing overcrowding in our state's jails," stated Brown.
Brown says their committee is researching data to find a solution on making the jails less populated.
"Could that person be part of a pre-trial release program, could that person be involved with community corrections, in day reporting or house arrest, or work release or some other operation in county government,"
The task force will serve until December 31st of this year.
