LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — A gift from a former zoo volunteer has turned into a reminder of his work in the community.
Gary Branson worked with the Columbian Park Zoo's education department for many years. He focused on outreach programs throughout Greater Lafayette.
Branson died last year, but his memory lives on through a new bronze medallion on the zoo's entry wall.
The armadillo medallion was paid for with the gift given by Gary and his wife, Jo Ann.
Education Director Amber Frederick said that was his favorite animal to showcase, and she'll think of him every time she sees it.
"I'll just think about all the times I got the chance to watch him engage with the kids or go out to one of the retirement communities here and present that armadillo and to really see him shine," she said.
The medallion was created by local sculptor, Rita Hadley. It's the third of Hadley's to be installed in this location.
