WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI)—City leaders in West Lafayette said it could be a while before a decision is made on the Chauncey Hill Mall development.
"The Chauncey Hill Mall started basically around the same time we were developing the concept of State St,” said Mayor of West Lafayette, John Dennis.
It was a year ago when the city announced that the Chauncey Hill Mall would be demolished for new development. Today it still sits.
"A lot of folks had expressed their opinion about the condition of the Chauncey Hill Mall, how it was situated, and basically what potential it had,” Dennis.
Discount Den moved to it’s new location on West Stadium Avenue earlier this week. A staple for many students.
The City is now concerned that if new development doesn't happen soon, Chauncey Hill could become a ghost town.
"When you think about it, you drive up State Street hill and that's sitting right at the top,” said Dennis. “We want that to be something represents not just Purdue University but the City of West Lafayette."
Co-owners of the Chauncey Hill property are still deliberating on what they'd like to see take place of the famed shopping center.
Mayor Dennis said it’s possible that it could be another year before a decision is made.
"This is our Renaissance period,” said Dennis. “We definitely want to make sure the old buildings go away. We want to see something of value and a product that's going to make everybody enthusiastic about it."
Senior at Purdue, Mark Menciano, said seeing vendors leave and relocate isn't a surprise.
"I mean I kind of expect all of the other vendors to go anyway," said Menciano.
He said he's up for the change as long as it's something that'll benefit students.
"I hope that it's not an apartment,” said Menciano. “I hope that they use it for more food places that are new and unique to the campus."
Mayor Dennis said the city stays in contact with the owners of Chauncey Hill Mall.
The city cannot force the owners to move quicker on this decision.
Dennis said ultimately it is up to them to make the move when it's time.
