LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - It's National Adoption Month and 13 children found their permanent home in Tippecanoe County Wednesday.

The initiative helps educate communities about the children in foster care.

For more than two decades, National Adoption Month has helped bring children and families together.

According to Adoption Champion Lydia Brownfield, there are more than 1,500 children waiting for adoption in Indiana.

She said many of the children are reaching the age where having a parent is vital.

"Those are some really key years to know you have a mom and a dad to call for the basic growing up. You know, graduating high school, filling out college applications and buying your first car,” said Brownfield.

Brownfield helped bring these children to their new families.

"Being able to make those connections for other families, answer their questions, introduce them to the kids, it's everything. It's wonderful. They're wonderful kids,” said Brownfield.

Thanks to National Adoption Month, Amanda Justice welcomed two new members to her family.

She adopted two boys who she's fostered over the past three years.

"We went to every court date with the parents, we've been through all the home checks and you know, we've done everything that they asked us to do as soon as they asked us to do it,” said Justice.

With the sound of the gavel, it was official.

Justice said the children were originally an emergency placement three years ago, but Justice says her family is thankful the two boys became part of their lives.

"It was unexpected, we weren't planning on having them. We didn't know what was going to happen, if it was too much for us. We all fell in love and it changed our lives,” said Justice.

The month is highlighted by National Adoption Day held the Saturday before Thanksgiving. More than 400 cities take part nationwide.
