LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — One hundred twenty five new jobs are in the works for the Greater Lafayette area.

This comes as Caterpillar prepares to make a nearly $80 million investment at its Lafayette facility.

According to paperwork on the Lafayette Redevelopment Commission website, Caterpillar is investing in building improvements, information technology software and equipment.

People News 18 spoke with in the community said they're looking forward to seeing the impact on the local economy.

"It's pretty impressive, and it shows that Caterpillar has a lot of faith in Lafayette to keep growing," said Lafayette resident Dan Ricks.

Caterpillar is getting ready to make a big investment in Lafayette.

"That's exciting," said local business owner Robert Turner. "Lafayette's growing. Lafayette's moving and grooving. So to invest in Lafayette, I know the community will get behind it because everybody is always looking for a good job."

Right now, the Lafayette facility employs about 1,300 people, but that number could soon increase, thanks to the proposed multi-million dollar investment.

"It's obviously a sign of a great trust in the Greater Lafayette area and in the people of this area. That we have a trainable workforce."

The investment would add more than 100 additional full time jobs at a rate of about $27 an hour.

"Everyone needs to work and raise their families," said Ricks. "So it's nice to have a job that you can support a whole family on."

News 18 reached out to Caterpillar. Media Relations Representative Lisa Miller told us the company did not have any comments at this time.

However, people in the community seem to be looking forward to what this means for Greater Lafayette.

"There are a lot of hardworking people around here," Turner added. "So to be able to get a job with good pay and good benefit, it's a
trickling effect. So they're going to show love to Lafayette and Lafayette will show love back in return."

The plan is being brought before the Lafayette Redevelopment Commission for approval Thursday. At that time, the company will ask for a tax abatement.

News 18 will be there for that meeting and will have the results of the decision posted on our website WLFI.com.
