WHITE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI)—Cathy Gross and Matthew McKean are two candidates in the running to be the next Mayor of Monticello.
Gross has lived in Monticello for 60 years. Born and raised, she is a graduate of Twin Lakes High School.
"The City of Monticello is just on the cusp of really great things I can just feel it,” said Gross.
Gross is all about service. She said much of her skill set has come from helping the community.
"It has been my life's work to try to help everyone,” said Gross. “No matter socioeconomic status, cultural differences. It's not something new. Service is not new to me."
She said she is ready to work on things like local ordinances and do the work of the people.
"What we need to do is make sure that our neighborhoods are stronger,” said Gross. “That we are understanding our cultural differences and that we are bringing people out."
33-year-old Matthew McKean comes from Kokomo, Indiana. He moved to Monticello his freshman year of high school.
"It's just such a great place to live,” said McKean. “There's so much opportunity here and there's so much that it has to offer."
McKean wants to work on revitalizing parts of the city like downtown Monticello.
"Place making, giving people an area to congregate,” said McKean. “Giving people an area to businesses and having it centrally located where they know where to go. I think we need to revitalize that."
He said he's confident if given the chance he'll serve the City of Monticello right.
"If I can't do anything to make it better then I haven't succeeded,” said McKean.
Gross said she knows the City of Monticello will continue growing if she's elected.
"I have the skills necessary to keep us moving forward,” said Gross. “I've served not only as a public servant in elected capacity. But I volunteered. I didn't just all of a sudden decide, hey I am going to run for office."
Voters can vote early until November 2nd at the county building in Monticello. For more information and adresses click here.
