LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has awarded CityBus with $1.2 million in federal funding to upgrade and expand its compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling station.
The award is part of the 5339 Bus and Bus Facilities grant program and will help CityBus accommodate its growing number of CNG vehicles as it replaces more diesel-fueled buses with low-emission alternatives.
Expanding CNG fuel capabilities will also reduce CityBus’s carbon footprint, lower fuel costs, increase operational efficiency, and support growing ridership.
CityBus replaced an additional four diesel buses with CNG-fueled buses in 2020, bringing its total number of CNG buses to 40. The transit system has also surpassed its goal to replace half its fixed-route fleet with CNG-powered buses by 2025.
