FLORA, Ind. (WLIF)- The town of Flora will soon get rid of a long-time eyesore in the community. The town will be demolishing the former Brethren's Home property. The property sits on the west edge of town.
The town received a grant from the Office of Community and Rural Affairs that allows them to tear down blighted properties. The Brethren’s Home used to be a nursing home but has been vacant since the early 2000s.
Town leaders say since the building has been abandoned there has been a lot of crime and vandalism on the property. They hope to have it torn down by the middle of the year.
"I would hope by September we should have active sight work at this location,” said Vince Seward the Town Council President of Flora.
When the old Brethren's Home is torn down it will most likely remain greenspace for at least five years.
If the town builds anything on the sight ahead of that timeline they would be required to pay a portion of the grant back. However, town leaders say they are open to developers who are interested in building on the property.
