WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind (WLFI) — With gentleness and moderation. Abundance and determination. The Benton Central Girls Basketball team came to play and to never give up.
"After sectionals, we were really excited obviously,” said Team Captain of the Benton Central Girls Basketball team Emma Fischer. “Then more wins kept coming"
For team captain and senior Emma Fischer, the team's bond is what carried them through too many wins.
"We've worked so hard for this,” said Fischer. “This team is just so special because I think we all just mold really well together"
The girls have had 26 wins all season. But going to state finals still came as a surprise. Even for Head Coach David Baxter.
"A lot of people didn't think that we'd come out of our sectional,” said Baxter. “Then we were the underdog in the regional. You know, we played extremely well we were able to win some games in a plethora of ways. So, it's been quite a ride. It's been a magical season."
So magical that the girls loaded the bus for state finals today. Making their way to the Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. And they were excited, to say the least.
The girls began loading the bus and as soon as everyone was set a big Bison scream came roaring from the bus.
Excitement like this doesn't just build by itself. It comes together and grows. Just like the Benton County community did today, officials like the Police Department and Fire Department came together to send off the lady Bison’s with an escort. That’s not all. Other members of the community were there in their personal vehicles ready to follow the ladies to victory.
"It's awesome to see just all of them and we're so excited,” said Fischer. “We want to give back as much as we can to them for all the support they've given us"
The message about character and determination is one the Benton Central team hopes to share.
"We hope that other kids see that it can happen with hard work and determination,” said Baxter. A little bit of luck, good things can happen to you when you put in the hard work and time"
