Battle Ground woman fights to keep peacocks on her property

A Battle Ground woman is fighting to keep two peacocks who've lived on her property for decades. While she said they're harmless, Tippecanoe County Animal Control says they're a public nuisance.

BATTLE GROUND, Ind. (WLFI) — Tommie Perdue said two peacocks have become a staple in her Goldsberry Road neighborhood.

"Nobody complains," said Perdue. Everybody is like, 'Oh the peacocks are here.'"

They've been a welcome addition to the wide array of wild animals that roam the 44-acre property.

"The only difference between those birds and the rest of these animals is that they cross the road too slow," she said. "I don't feed them. I don't maintain them. They're safe here, and they've never hurt anyone," said Perdue.

But the fact they cross the road is what bothers Tippecanoe County Animal Control. The pair has been deemed a public nuisance.

"No one has hit them," Perdue explained. "They're huge. You see them out there."

Perdue has been given a choice: cage the birds or find them a new home. She said she's consulted experts about it, and the outlook isn't good.

"After being free range this long, they could die in the cages," she said. "They'll start fighting the cages. They'll throw themselves against the walls. They'll stop eating."

Perdue said rehoming isn't an option either.

"Even bird and veterinary experts cannot guarantee that they're not going to try to come home," she added.

Perdue said the birds have lived on the property for decades. She said the citations started when animal control began to use a nearby shelter.

Perdue's fiance Koda Ordille said removing them would be a disappointment to the community.

"So many people get excited when they see them or hear them," said Ordille. "I mean, people drive up and down and make peacock noises."

Perdue has been summoned to court on Dec. 1. She said the community has shown support through social media and some might even show up in the courtroom.

She hopes the outcome is what's best for the birds.

"They came here," said Perdue. "They've been here almost 20 years and almost 30 years. So I'm signing their death certificate. If I don't fight for them, who will?"

Animal Control Officer Seth Kirkendall declined an on-camera interview because of the pending court date. However, he said because no animal can be unrestrained in the county the birds violate a county ordinance. He said wandering on the road makes them a public nuisance and he's just trying to keep the public safe.
