Here is the latest update on the heat wave & tropical impacts.

Updated: Aug 25, 2020 8:43 AM

Highs today reached 88-95 with heat indices peaking at 95-106.  This, after 64-72 this morning.

Nebraska to northern Illinois saw temperatures near to at 100.

Chicago hit 97, Moline 97, as did Burlington, Iowa.  Joliet, Illinois reached 95.  Parts of northwestern Iowa hit 100, Nebraska skyrocketed to as high as 101 & even Worland, Wyoming hit 97 at a high elevation.  Sheridan, Wyoming hit 99, Lander 97.

Highs of 93-98 are likely tomorrow & Wednesday (with heat indices 98-108) with complexes of severe storms staying north & northwest of our area in the "Ring of Fire".

An outflow boundary from storm complex north & northeast of our area will lay up in our northeastern counties for a time.  It will be a close call to see if a random storm can form on that boundary Fulton to Miami counties.  We will monitor.  This, after outflow boundary with some cloudiness, passes through a good chunk of the viewing area in the morning.

Overnight lows will run 67-75.

Hazy sunshine will occur both days.

Trapped pollution & high pollen will make for tough few days for allergy & asthmas sufferers.  Also, smoke from western wildfires will make for a pale, hazy, bronzy sky.  The smoke will be many thousands of feet up, however, & not a factor for those here at the surface.

HRRR model smoke:

Smoke is riding top of the ridge into our area.  This "Ring of Fire" zone will promote multiple rounds of severe storms for the next few days from Wyoming & Montana to the Mid-Atlantic.  We will be in the dome of heat.

What is left of Tropical Storm Marco will be absorbed into Hurricane Laura with a landfall in Louisiana or far southeast Texas.

This, combined with the old circulation of Hurricane Genevieve & surface cold front & upper trough, means numerous showers & storms Friday to Saturday.

Strengthening mid & upper flow & strengthening wind fields with remnants of Laura means some severe weather risk is possible (looks MARGINAL to SLIGHT).

Locally-heavy rainfall is possible.

Early to mid next week strong upper trough, cold front & reasonably strong wind fields aloft with the remnants circulation of a Pacific hurricane will bring another bout of numerous showers & storms (with some severe risk, too).  Right now, SLIGHT RISK parameters are showing up.  We will monitor, however.

Locally-heavy rainfall is possible.
