ATTICA, Ind. (WLFI)-The city of Attica has applied for a grant that would help revitalize its downtown area. The program is called PreservINg Main Street. The two million dollar grant will be awarded to one pilot community.
That community will be eligible for implementation of downtown preservation projects through OCRA's Community Development Block Grant program. Attica is one of 71 communities that qualify for this program.
For a community to qualify they must have a downtown that is on the national registry, and the applicant had to be a main street organization in good standing.
Brent Bouerband with the Attica Main Street says if they don't receive this funding nine percent of the historic buildings in its downtown area could be torn down.

"This is what we call the 200 block project," said Bouerband.  "It was originally 6 buildings and two of them have been torn down and four of them are really in an imminent point of being torn down."

This is the plan picture below what Attica would implement if they receive the funding.

If Attica is selected it would receive a million dollars a year for two years. After the second year, the community would have to match 10 percent. The community will find out on Friday if they are one of the finalists. For more information about the grant program click here.
