ATTICA, Ind. (WLFI)-The town of Attica has had a hard time taking care of its downtown area. Now the town has created a non-profit organization to help them create economic revitalization in the downtown area. Attica is in the process of signing a contract with a non-profit called Wabash Economic Growth Alliance or WEGA.

"It consists of some local people who are going to serve on the board as well as some people who are partnering with Attica who will lend their expertise to help us progress economically within the city," said Councilwoman at Large in Attica Patricia Hargan.

Essentially, the non-profit will work like any other department in the city.

"It's going to be just like any department here in Attica whether it be the police department or the fire department budget we would transfer an amount of money to the nonprofit," added Hargan. "They would come back and report to us how the money is spent"-Patricia Hargan

One of the first areas of the city WEGA will be focusing on is downtown.

"Things haven't changed here in a long time and I think that this council is ready to move and ready to go forward, " said Hargan.

Some businesses fill the downtown storefronts, but there are also dozens of historic buildings that are abandoned and dilapidated. Now the town is trying to figure out what to do with them to create economic growth.

"No one wants to tear down old historic buildings it's not a fun decision to make however it's a decision that has to be made and we are going to look at the study and we are going to proceed from there," added Hargan.

Regardless if the historic buildings are structurally sound or not, the town and its soon-to-be partnership with WEGA are looking toward the future.

"The project we have right now is we are working on the marketplace downtown," said Bill Glass the President of WEGA.   "The marketplace will be an incubation type of business area where a small business can get a start and foot in the door and have low or even free rent it may be."

The town of Attica is currently waiting for an engineering study. The study will determine what downtown historic buildings are structurally sound and able to be rehabilitated. The city hopes to break ground on the marketplace in the next couple of months. The City Council plans on signing a contract with WEGA sometime in May.
