LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - In the giving spirit of the holiday season, the Central Indiana Chapter of the American Red Cross is asking for blood donations. But also in the wake of local tragedy, it is also a way to help the situation.

Vanessa Davis is the Executive Director of the Central Indiana Chapter of the American Red Cross. She said having blood donations ready for fire fatalities like the one in Logansport can help save those who make it out alive with injuries.

"Our hearts are breaking for those families and the people that are affected and a way that you can help is by thinking of what you can do. Well one thing you can donate blood,” she said.

They are especially looking for people with O negative blood to donate. This is the blood type that is universal.

Davis said it is most useful when doctors need to make a quick decision about what type of blood to give to a patient.

She also added that students, both high school and college aged, are a big part of their donation base. When the students go away for break, their reserves can become depleted.

And when you donate locally, there is a good possibility it will go to saving a local life.

“There's a very good chance that it could stay in this area however one of the wonderful benefits of when you donate to the Red Cross is that we have the ability to position the blood products where they are needed the most,” she said.

Davis said they will be hosting blood drives all across our viewing area. Those who donate from now until December 19th are eligible to receive a $5 Amazon gift card.
