TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) — The Tippecanoe County Health Department is encouraging parents to get their children vaccinated against COVID-19.

As we reported last week, the FDA has approved the emergency use of the Pfizer vaccine for children ages 12 and older.

"If you want it to go back to normal in school and you want to have a normal school year, children are going to have to be vaccinated for this to happen," said Tippecanoe County Health Department Administrator Khala Hochstedler

Hochstedler said there are some serious misconceptions when it comes to children and COVID-19.

"We've had several children have serious side effects and have to be hospitalized at Riley from COVID-19 in our community," she said. "We've had a child die, in our community, of COVID-19.

Hochstedler said there are also concerns about the long-term effects of the virus.

That's why she's encouraging parents to get their children vaccinated if they're 12 or older, but she said there's another benefit of getting the shot.

"You don't have to be quarantined if you are vaccinated if exposed," explained Hochstedler. "So, that is a true benefit of the vaccine as far as you're child not having to miss school or any extra-curricular activities."

Hochstedler said she's been working with the local schools on how to educate parents about the vaccine.

Lafayette School Corporation Superintendent Les Huddle said it's a decision that's being left up to the parents.

"We're not leaving kids out of registration if the parents are saying, 'We're not going to get vaccinated,'" he said. "We're also not asking, 'Has your child been vaccinated or not been vaccinated?'"

However, Huddle said the corporation is ready to help any parent with questions about the vaccine.

"If they feel comfortable and need to find a site, we're ready and willing to help them with that," said Huddle.

If parents are uncomfortable with the vaccine not having full FDA approval yet, Hochstedler has some good news.

"We are expecting Pfizer to come out of EUA approval and have full FDA approval, just like any other vaccine you give your child, in June," Hochstedler said.

Hochstedler said the county received 60 doses of the Pfizer vaccine specifically for the 12 to 15 age group, and so far, 50 have been given.

She said there are more doses on the way and encourages parents to schedule an appointment for their child.
