LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — The city of Lafayette is bringing back a popular downtown event.

As we reported in August, portions of Main Street were closed every weekend until Nov. 1 to allow for open air seating.

The goal was for local restaurants to get more customers while keeping socially distant.

Tuesday, the board of works approved another season of Fresh Air Eats, but this year is a little different though.

To kick off the season, it will be held two weekends in May.

After that, it will take place once a month until the second weekend of October.

Economic Development Director Dennis Carson said there's a reason it's being held monthly instead of weekly.

"There are going to be plenty of activities going on every weekend so Fresh Air Eats didn't necessarily have to be every weekend," said Carson.

The other change will be Main Street closing from 2nd to 10th Street. That's more street closures than last year.

Carson said it will continue to help businesses recover from the pandemic.

"Now that the capacity restrictions are higher this will probably even help them to have more capacity than they normally would," Carson explained.

Fresh Air Eats is being held monthly so it won't conflict with any other planned events.

The first weekend is May 14 to 16, and the second weekend is May 20 to 23.

The rest of the dates for Fresh Air Eats are below:

  • June 18 to 20
  • July 16 to 18
  • Aug. 20 to 22
  • Sept. 24 to 26
  • Oct. 8 to 10
