LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — A teenager is dead and his brother injured after an early morning shooting Sunday, according to police. Officers said they have found an alleged suspect, 20-year-old Alexander Garcia-Johnson, after a day-long hunt.
Garcia-Johnson was found around 6:45 p.m. Sunday in the 300 block of Cheshire Lane in Lafayette, police said. Officers said he is in custody.
LPD officers responded to a call of several shots fired at 3117 Rubble Way around 4:30 a.m. on Nov. 18. When officers arrived, they found 18-year old Jontae Billups-Brooks with one gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was taken to Franciscan Health Lafayette East where he was later pronounced dead.
Police also learned of a second victim who had left the scene. The second victim was identified as Keyonte Billups-Brooks, the brother of Jontae. He was taken to IU Health Arnett Hospital with one gunshot wound to the arm, officers said. Keyonte was treated for his injuries and later released from the hospital.
Neither the Billups-Brooks brothers nor Garcia-Johnson lived at the apartment where the shots were fired, Lt. Brian Phillips said. Officers said there was some sort of gathering at the apartment that night.
Police said Garcia-Johnson does not live at the residence he was hiding out on Cheshire Lane. That location is just a few blocks west of where the shooting happened.
