TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI)-- As summer approaches, some students could be left without food for the season.

Food Finders Food Bank is one of four non-profit locations to test the new No Kid Hungry program. Instead of going to locations such as churches or schools for meals, now families can turn to their own neighborhoods.

Food Finder's summer food service program provides children in low-income families a sense of security. But for those who can't make it to these food sites, now they will have an alternative.

At the beginning of the week, drivers will deliver meals door-to-door to community leaders. These volunteers will agree to provide their homes as a location for children to receive food from.

Program Innovation Manager Kirsten Craft said the four million children receiving summer meals through federal summer meals programs will now have easier access.

"There isn't public transportation for mom and dad when they aren't home to drive their two kids to the summer meals site, where they can get food." Craft said.

Lyft driver Pamela Fredericks said this program will save her customers money.

"There's a lot of people that struggle because of the economy and it can wax and wane sometimes," Fredericks said. "You are doing fine and other times you need that gap filled so I think it's a wonderful thing and I like kids, they deserve to have a good meal."

The pilot program is scheduled to run between July 9th and August 3rd. To learn more or apply to participate, reach out to Food Finders’ Program Coordinator, Courtney Sloan, at csloan@food-finders.org or call, 765.471.0062 x209.
