ROSEMONT, Ill. (Purdue Sports) — Maddy Williams' record-breaking goal as part of the first individual multi-goal effort posted against No. 9 Penn State this season has earned Purdue's all-time scoring leader her third Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week award of the season.
Williams is the league's first player since PSU's Maya Hayes in 2013 to win Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week three times in the same season. Williams is the first Boilermaker to accomplish the feat and her four career Offensive Player of the Week awards matches Jessica Okoroafo's program record. Former goalkeeper Lauren Mason was a six-time Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week winner during her career.
Williams tied and eclipsed Okoroafo's all-time goals record (35) with her two goals in Friday's draw at Penn State. Her two goals helped assure that the Boilermakers never trailed in the tough road test. The Nittany Lions entered the night 7-0 at home this season and Purdue had never earned a standings point at Jeffrey Field prior to Friday.
But Williams equaled the number of goals PSU had conceded in its first nine Big Ten games of the season combined, snapping the Lions' shutout streaks at 422 consecutive minutes (overall) and 604 consecutive minutes (at home). Williams led the way as Purdue became the first Big Ten team to score multiple goals against PSU in 2017. Overall, Penn State had not conceded a goal on its home pitch since its Aug. 18 season opener vs. BYU.
Williams has been honored as the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week after each of her three multi-goal games this season. She posted the fifth hat trick in program history in the Sept. 8 win at Louisville and had a program record seven points as part of a multi-goal game in the Sept. 17 win at Michigan State.
Williams' eight career multi-goal games is also a new program record, breaking a first-place tie with Lauren Sesselmann. As Purdue's all-time points leader before Williams bested her benchmark this season, Sesselmann is also the only other Boilermaker in program history with three multi-goal games in a season. The Olympic medalist also had a multi-goal game at Penn State in 2005 while accomplishing the feat as a senior.
Led by Williams, Purdue has claimed seven weekly Big Ten honors this season. Kylie Hase and Katie Luce swept the Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week awards Oct. 3. Hase has also been named Freshman of the Week twice. While Freshman of the Week was not added to the awards program until 2009, the seven honors is a program high nonetheless. The Boilermakers won six weekly awards in 2009 (2 Offensive, 2 Defensive, 2 Freshman).
Purdue needs one standings point via a win or draw in Wednesday's game vs. Maryland to qualify for the Big Ten Tournament for the first time since 2008 (the event was not held in 2009 and 2010). Williams will be recognized prior to the 7 p.m. ET kickoff for establishing new all-time program records for goals (36), assists (26) and points (98) this year. She needs just one goal to tie single-season team records for goals (13) and points (36). One more goal would also give her 100 career points.
