LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — Before the program's loss to Delphi in last season's class 2A sectional title game, the Central Catholic baseball team had won 10 straight sectional crowns.
Head coach Tim Bordenet has experienced a lot of success during his tenure at CC. 2020 will obviously a little different. The Knights won't get a crack at getting back to familiar territory in the post-season, but they were only there in the first place as he says, because of his seven seniors.
The first senior is the school's all-time leading scorer on the basketball court. Carson Barrett played first base for the Knights. He was a three year starter and twice named an all-conference selection. Barrett is walking-on to the Purdue men's basketball program in the coming year.
Daniel Roach helped lead the Knight's football program to a state title in the fall. He played center field for Bordenet's team and started every game over the last two seasons. Roach will walk-on with the Purdue football program in the fall.
Kyle Onken pitched and played right field for the Knights. Onken plans on entering the pre-med program at Indiana University.
Dakota Skees served as a designated hitter and was scheduled to be the team's starting catcher this season. Skees will be attending Purdue University.
Jake Benson pitched and played all over the infield during his time at CC. Benson is currently undecided on which school he will attend, but plans on playing baseball at the next level.
Noah Wiercioch pitched and played right field. He will attend Purdue University in the fall.
And finally Pete Spencer served as a designated hitter, played first base and saw time at second base. Spencer is still deciding on where he will attend college.
According to Bordenet, all of these guys are leaving the program they played in a better place.
"There is no doubt, it's better because of what they have done," said Bordenet.
"Even though we didn't get to have a season this year, they showed great leadership in the off-season. They lead by their work ethic and how they approached the game day-in and day-out."
"Obviously they were very successful on the field but they are great people and showed great sportsmanship at all times and that's what I am really proud about."
