WHITE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) —  Kent's Cucurbits is celebrating 30 years of business in White County.

"It's hard to believe that it's been 30 years," said Kent's Cucurbits Co-Owner, Nina Kent. "It seems like just yesterday when we started this."

Indiana is ranked 4th in the nation for pumpkin production. Through the pumpkin farm, the Kent family contributes to Indiana's pumpkin production.

"That large pumpkin weighs I think approximately 1,019 pounds," said Kent. "We always try to get a big one for everyone to look at and we usually start with seeds that came from a large pumpkin so that helps to get the hereditary issues in there and then take care of it through the season."

Kent enjoys working alongside her husband, and children, operating the family-owned agritourism business.

"It's my husband and I and our three sons," said Kent. "So this is about all our sons know since it's been 30 years of this."

Kent said the name for their business is unique.

"We do have an odd name Kent's Cucurbits as our last name is Kent and a cucurbits would be anything that grows on the ground on a vine," said Kent. "That would be like pumpkins, gourds, swash, cantaloupe, watermelon and cucumbers. Those are all of the Cucurbita family, so that's how we came up with the name."

Kent says the idea of starting their family-owned business came from a conference they attended years ago.

"We had gone to a conference for diversification in farming," said Kent. "From the conference we started doing more of the vegetables, sweet corn, we have Cantaloupe, watermelon and the pumpkins and the mums."

Kent says they no longer grow sweet corn or vegetables. However, there's a variety of activities for guest to enjoy.

"We do have a corn maze that's four acres that people like to roam through and on the weekends weather depending we will have the pumpkin vine express," said Kent. "The pumpkin vine express will take you through some sunflowers, through a corn field with some funny skeletons doing some odd things that you can see and then up through the pumpkin patch so you can see where the pumpkins grow. "

Over the 30 years their farm has changed what they have to offer. This year, the Kent family grew more sunflowers compared to previous years.

"We have had the you-pick sunflowers, which are all different colors and people can go out and pick their own sunflowers," said Kent.
"This year we did have two different areas where they could walk through the sunflowers."

As the Kent family continues their 30th year of business, Kent would like to say thank you.

"We really appreciate all of our customers that have been backing us for the past 30 years."
